The Protective Role of Ginkgo Biloba against Radiation Induced Injury on Rat Gastro-intestinal Tract
GINKGO BILOBA extract (EGb 761) is an antioxidant substance exhibits a wide variety of biological activities. The present study was performed to evaluate oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters of gastrointestinal injury induced by exposing rats to acute doses of γ-rays and the potential value of EGb 761 in preventing changes in these parameters. Male albino rats were treated orally with the extract in a dose of 100 mg/ kg for 7 successive days before whole body exposure to acute radiation levels of 2 and 6 Gray (Gy). Control groups were run concurrently. The rats were sacrificed 3 days after irradiation. Various inflammatory mediators and biochemical parameters were determined in the stomach and intestine. Both tissues were also examined histopathologically. Exposure to radiation led to dose dependent changes in the level of oxidative stress biomarkers (elevation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and nitrite associated with a glutathione (GSH) decrease as well as in the level of inflammatory parameters (elevation of Tumour necrosis factor-ὰ (TNF-ὰ) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) associated with depletion of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Pre-treatment with EGb 761 protected against the changes in both oxidative stress biomarkers and inflammatory mediators. EGb 761 exerted a protective effect against the radiation induced gastrointestinal damage, possibly through its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

Ginseng, a Potentially Therapeutic Drug in γ-Irradiated Whole Blood Culture
GINSENG is commonly used as herbal medicines with wide range of beneficial effects. It is also approved as effective agent against radiation hazards, through its immunomodulating role in irradiated experimental animals.
This experiment aimed to assess cytogenetic and biochemical changes of ginseng at a working dose (100μg/ ml) in suppressing radiation effects of human peripheral blood. The treatment times were 6, 48 and 72h after γ-irradiation at dose of 4 Gy (the last two treatment periods were done through blood culture). Triple blood cultures for each blood sample were set up. Cytogenetic investigations were evaluated using chromosome aberration (CA) analysis and cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay (CBMN). The levels of malondialdhyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and nitric oxide (NO) were estimated in blood plasma and in 48 & 72h blood cultures. In addition, immune function response was assessed by estimation of the levels of (Immunoglobulin G) IgG and IgM for the same treatment periods.
Ionizing irradiation induced significant decrease of SOD activity. While, CA (dicentric, ring, breaks and polyploidy), micronucleus (MN), MDA level and NO concentration were significantly increased. For IgG and IgM, there is temporary over-production of them after 6h of irradiation, and then their levels decreased in the periods 48 & 72h within the cultures.
Ginseng post-irradiation treatment exhibits increase in the level of IgG and IgM production, and improvement in NO concentration. In addition, there is reduction in the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO), CA and MN frequencies. Results concluded that ginseng has antimutagenic effect and benefit against oxidative stress involved by irradiation.

The Protective Effect of Non-fluoroquinolones against Chemo- and Radiation Therapy-Induced Damage in Mice
CANCERS of head & neck has increased in the last years with increased use of chemo-radiotherapy. So, the trials to achieve newly developed agents that combat the hazards of cancer therapy have been urgent. This study was carried out to investigate the possible protective effect of new quinolone derivative against the oxidative damage of chemo-radiotherapy. Twenty four male mice were divided into four groups; group C, mice were served as control, group SR, mice were injected with cisplatin for 5 days and then irradiated with 2 Gy at the last day, group QSR, mice were injected with non-fluoroquinolone; 2-(1-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroquinolin-3-yl)-2-oxoacetic acid (EHQA) for 14 days in addition to injection with cisplatin in the last 5days then irradiated, group Q, mice were injected with EHQA for 14 days.
Tongue specimen was subjected to histological and immune-histo-chemical evaluation for proliferative and apoptotic activity. Histologically, EHQA administration prior to cisplatin and radiation exposure ameliorated the damaging effects of both on tongue. Morphometric studies of the treated group represented marked increase in proliferative and anti-apoptotic capacity of the epithelial cells especially the basal cells. Administration of EHQA before chemo-radiotherapy can to great extent, reduce the hazardous effects and the mechanism by which exerted its effect can be related to regulation of cell cycle and cell death processes.

High Dose Film Dosimeter Based on a Mixture of m-cresol Purple and Tetrabromo phenolphthalein Ethyl Ester Dyed Poly (vinyl alcohol)
Gathering two pH indicator dyes m-cresol purple (MCP), tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester (TBPE), previously studied as individual dosimeter each at low dose application in the same polymer matrix (PVA) extends the application dose response to 60 kGy. This flexible plastic film changes its colour from green to red passing through yellow colour on exposure to γ-rays photons due to the consequent lowering of pH caused by HCl generated from the radiolysis of chloral hydrate. Effect of different concentrations of chloral hydrate on response of the film was investigated. The film shows excellent stability before and after irradiation. The film has excellent stability in 10% to 50% relative humidity range (RH). The overall combined uncertainty (at 2ϭ) associated with measurement of response (Ai/ A0) at 438nm for dose range 5-60kGy is 6.33 %. So this film has the ability to monitor the absorbed dose in low and moderate irradiation dose due to its excellent stability before and after irradiation with a significance confidence level.

Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Media Using Amidoximated Jute Fibres: A Comparative Study
JUTE FIBERS were grafted with acrylonitrile (AN) induced by direct gamma irradiation. All the factors which affect the grafting process were investigated. The grafting at the optimum conditions was followed by amidoximation reaction. The conversion of AN into acrylamidoxime was studied by fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The treated Jute fibres were used as an adsorbent substrate for heavy metal ions such as Pb2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Fe2+ from their solutions. The different factors which affect the adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions, such as pH, contact time, metal ions concentrations were studied and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was highlighted. It was found that the adsorption capacity was enhanced at acidic medium of pH 4 and increased with increasing of contact time.

Multifunction Finishing and Pigment Printing of UV Cured Cotton/Polyester Fabrics Coated with Plasticized Epoxy Resin/ZnO Formulation
COTTON/ POLYESTER fabrics were coated with epoxy acrylate (EA) formulations plasticized by castor oil (CO), in the presence of benzophenone as initiator, ZnO (antibacterial agent) and pigment printing. Ultra violet (UV) irradiation was used as a curing system. The effect of UV irradiation time and CO percentage on the mechanical and crease recovery properties were investigated. The effect of the coating process on the cross-section feature by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), the antibacterial properties, water retardance, colour difference and the durability for washing of the coated fabrics were also investigated. From the results, it was found that the crease recovery and antibacterial properties were enhanced. Also, the colour durability against multiple washing cycles gave adequate results after application of the investigated coating formulation. The most fitting castor oil per cent was found to be 45%, while the 3% ZnO recorded the best antibacterial and mechanical properties. The pigment per cent that gave the highest durability and adequate colour strength was 0.6%.

Enhancement of Corrosion Protection of UV Curable Coatings in the Presence of Aliphatic and Aromatic Amine Compounds
CORROSION inhibitors based on aromatic amine; 4-carboxy aniline (CA) and aliphatic amine; acrylamide (AA) were prepared. CA and AA amine compounds allowed reacting with epoxidized sunflower oil (ESO) at 130oC for 3h to prepare amine adducts ESO/ CA and ESO/ AA, respectively. The adducts were characterized by IR-spectroscopy and oxirane content determination. Different ratio of prepared adduct were added in coating formulations based on epoxy acrylate oligomers to evaluate them as corrosion inhibitors on metal substrates under UV radiation. Corrosion resistance tests and wt loss values were measured for all cured films, in addition to the physical and mechanical measurements. It was found that the coating films containing CA have high resistance for corrosion of metal than AA and the optimum concentration is 0.5%.

The Use of Ionizing Radiation to Prepare Polymeric Agro-waste Composite for Sandy Soil Application
SUPERABSORBENT hydrogel composite (SHC) by radiation induced crosslinking of polyacrylamide (PAAM)/ rice straw (RS) composite and hydrophilic membrane system based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for possible applications in agricultural field of sandy soil was studied. The factors affecting the quick and capacity for retaining irrigated water of swelling behaviour of prepared hydrogel composite through hydrophilic membrane system and increasing foaming/ porosity of the SHC were studied.
The mechanism for this is most likely a prevention of irrigated water to pass through sandy particles for a time ranged from 20 to 40 min for the fluid uptake capacity and swelling of the SHC to take and swelling place without almost any loss of irrigated water. Effect of acid/ alkalinity (PH) and salt concentration were investigation.

Physico-Mechanical Properties of Gamma Irradiated EPDM Rubber Nano composites Loaded with Fumed Silica and Zirconium Silicate
ETHYLENE-PROPYLENE-DIENE rubber (EPDM/ nano-filler) composites were prepared and crosslinked by gamma rays. The composites either contain 40phr of fumed silica, 40phr of zirconium silicate, separately, or different ratios from both ranging from 30:10-10:30, respectively. The effect of the presence of these fillers in the composites on their electrical and thermal properties was studied. The mechanical properties namely, tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break at different irradiation doses has been measured. The best mechanical properties for the all irradiated composites were attended at 100kGy. The fumed silica increased the tensile strength and volume resistivity of the composites, but Zirconium silicate slightly increased the thermal stability and the former properties.
